Four Part Writing

Mini Mind Dump:

There are MANY rules....

-double the bass or I'll break your face

- double the soprano or ill break your piano

- never double on diminished (7) chords (I think because of the tritone situation)

- you don't need to double 7 chords, because they already have 4 chord tones

- arrange for smooth voice leading

Step 4

  • Comment on the feedback you received and necessary revisions

1.  First Draft

2.  Second Draft

3.  Final Submission

While writing this four part assignment, I found that I would get 3 or 4 measures in, and have to go back and fix a mistake that would take me back to the very beginning. I did not have multiple drafts as I didn't want to get to the end and keep making mistakes, so I went through each measure very slowly. I had dad check every few measures to make sure I was on track, and for the most part I made little mistakes, the most common being not catching parallel octaves and fifths.

Step 5

  • What aspects of this four part writing assignment were most challenging?

  • What aspects of this four part writing assignment were most rewarding?

The most challenging aspect of four part writing is catching all of the little nit picky rules that are so hard to find in a broken up snowman format. I got frustrated when I would make a mistake that would compromise the rest of my composition; however, it is very rewarding when you reach the end for the last time knowing you do not have to go back. It is also very rewarding hearing your composition and just listening back to the progressions without thinking about all of the intervals and mishaps.
