Step 2

  • Describe each of the following aspects of your proposed composition

  1. Instrumentation/Performing Forces Violin, Cello, Clarinet, Piano 

  2. Meter start with 4/4, go into other meters as I go along

  3. Key Signature A Minor 

  4. Tempo Start slow (60 maybe), go fast later (120) 

  5. Dynamics Varying... start quiet with one layer and build do an eventual fortisimo 

  6. Song Form Free form, start with a motive and build off of that throughout the piece in different variations 

  7. Numbers of Measures maybe 30, honestly don't know. However long it takes to complete my goals

  8. Chord Progressions Not 100% sure for exact chord progressions but I may modulate and I may throw some funky dominants in

  9. Cadences lots of deceptive ones!

  10. Texture(s) Probably polyphonic

Step 3

  • Answer the following questions regarding your compositional proposal

  1. What is it you hope to accomplish? I hope to write a really funky tune that will be memorable 

  2. Does this project relate to any of your Benchmark Goals? Yes, one of my benchmark goals was to bring what I learn in this class to other areas of my music life, and even if I cannot bring this piece to life it will help my composition skills for the future. 

  3. What concepts will need additional research or review? I will need to review how to build correct chords as I go along because I may stumble into come problems 

  4. How will you sequence this process? What will you do first, second, third, etc.? I will probably start with writing a motive and going off on that with one voice, and then layering others as I go along that compliment. After that I will go back and add more color to the piece to make it super original and funky

  5. How will you know it is a success? I will listen to it and get a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

  • Answer the following reflective questions

  1. Describe the skills/knowledge you needed to complete this assignment that you learned/refined as a result of taking this class. I needed to be absolutely solid with knowing my rhythms and also what notes fit in the key and how to determine what key I wanted to write in. 

  2. Describe the resource/information that was most helpful to completing this composition. I used the notes I took if I had a question about the chords I was using or any small technical issues I had. I also had to look up online the ranges for the instruments I was composing in. 

  3. How close was your final product in relation to your initial proposal? If things changed, why/how? My end result was very different from my initial proposal. I did keep the same instruments and the fact that I wanted to use a minor key, but I ended up changing keys 

  4. Comment on your time management for this project. Since I am quite ahead in this class, I really have been quite easy on myself with personal deadlines. I did the final first so I could not feel rushed doing my composition, and I took some days to do work for other classes to get caught up. 

  5. What was the greatest benefit of your learning experience for this composition? I learned that you will never truly feel done with a piece, and also learned how important it is to know how to balance instrumental parts. 

  6. What was the greatest challenge of your learning experience for this composition? My greatest challenge was probably going from one section to another and choosing how to smoothly transition, and also how to build appropriate chords with each instrumental line. 

  7. Were there any aspects of your outcome that were surprising or unexpected? I was surprised in the keys I chose and how I echoed lines in other parts. 

  8. How would you approach the compositional process differently if you had another opportunity to learn in this manner? I would maybe try to write the melodic line first and then compose under it instead of trying to compose all lines at once. 

  9. Describe the kind of composition you would pursue if given another opportunity to do so. I really want to try and write a horn duet to try and recreate with Blake, once that is very lyrical and fun.

  • Pair and Share your composition 

1.  Who was your partner? Dani

2.  Describe their composition. Any surprises or take aways? It was very blendy and mushed together perfectly, like a riverrr. It had lots of melodic lines which flowed very nicely. I was surprised by how AWESOME it was. A+. It had a french horn mini solo and that surprised me. Its simplicity yet complexity was also really awesome. 

3.  What feedback/response did you receive about your composition?  It reminded her of one of the circuits piece, being techy but using only non-electronic instruments. She said it remained techy yet lyrical.
